Save Big Bucks On A Used Car
Buying a used car can be like a crap shoot, a real hit or miss proposition. I don't know about you, but the thought of plunking down five thousand dollars for a car and hoping that it will give you several years of driving satisfaction is downright frightening. Why go into the used car market unequipped? The following tips can ease your concerns and help you walk away from the deal a real winner.Dealer v. Private SellerIf you purchase a car through a reputable dealer, they should offer to you some type of warranty even if it is only a 30 day warranty on select components. However, when buying through a dealer, you'll pay a premium for that privilege as the price will likely be hundreds of dollars above the Kelley blue book price. Therefore, consider buying directly from a seller who really knows his car.Run a Repair ReportTo avoid buying a lemon, pay the fee to get a repair report on the car from a company like CARFAX. There isn't a 100% guarantee that they have all of the information about the car, but you can reduce the chances of purchasing a lemon by running a vehicle history report on the car.Take It to a MechanicIf you find a vehicle that you really like, take the car to a trusted mechanic for an independent opinion. If the seller objects, simply walk away as the car likely has some hidden problem that will become revealed once your mechanic examines the car.Consider A Program CarCars driven by Hertz, Avis, and other rental companies are often sold to the public through retail outlets operated by these companies. Okay, I know what you are thinking: these cars are not only used, but abused. Well, the car rental companies know about these fears and only offer for sale those cars that are in excellent shape. Furthermore, their maintenance schedules are impeccable and typically go much further than what the manufacturer recommends. This translates into a very good quality used car for you at a competitive price. Low miles too: most are sold with less than 30,000 miles on the odometer, sometimes much less. One caution: watch out for Katrina cars, vehicles that were declared totaled after the hurricane struck the gulf region but were salvaged, repaired and sold in another state after the title was washed. If you suspect the origin of any car simply walk away from that sale.Joseph is the proud owner of Finance Guide, a website that will

Give Your Car A Brand New Look With New Tires Or Wheels
If you are looking to change the appearance of your car, there is nothing simpler than getting a new set of tires. Just by switching over to some new wheels or tires, you will be, of course, giving your car the equivalent of a facelift, and at the same time improving its handling and a more secure ride. Your vehicle will get a rejuvenated look and hug those corners tight! When you are going to pick out your new rims and tires, you will first have to answer some simple questions. Do you want to upgrade to a new set of wheels that has the same diameter and width of your old tires? Or, do you want to get something bigger? If you opt for wider wheels, your car will have that much more contact with the ground surface, which will give you a better rate of acceleration and a tighter grip during turns, as well as giving you more stopping power. If you go with taller rims, you will draw more attention to your wheels. This gives your ride a striking, powerful feel that demands looks from those you drive by. Don't worry, necessarily, about fitting taller tires onto your car. There are specially designed low-profile tires that maintain the same tire diameter as the tires that came with your car. Getting taller rims with low-profile tires is called plus-sizing your car. The benefits of this are that, instead of recalibrating your speedometer as you would if you changed your wheel diameter, your car will be ready to drive immediately after your new tires are installed. Recalibration can be a serious pain in the neck, take my word on it.If you are looking for the most awe-inspiring wheels, you should go with both taller rims, and taller wheels. This works well, for instance, on raised trucks that are going to be used for off-roading. Keep your truck's belly high and appearance looking mean with big, tough looking tires! After you decide on what size wheel and tire you are going to install, you will have to choose a style. Since there are so many different types of wheels, this can be a difficult stage. Are you looking for a glossy, shiny wheel, like chrome or polished aluminum ones? Or something a little bit more low-key, like brushed billet? Take your time, and pick what goes well with your ride. After you've selected your rims, you have to pick which tires you want to put on them. Tires come in basic, black walled designs, or with white letters, or with a white stripe, or even with a colored stripe, if you are looking for something a bit bolder. You can even get a tire with colored treads, should you so desire. So start thinking, and remember if you want it, you most likely can get it.Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach, Florida. Why You Should Always Seek Genuine Mazda Auto Parts
Mazda automobiles are well known for their classy styles and cool sports cars. Many people have longed to own one of these beauties. They imagine themselves zipping down a highway at break neck speeds or slowly cruising through town, making sure that everyone sees and admires them. When it's time to find replacement parts for the Mazda, many people will look around, hoping to find some that will properly fix their cars. One of the best ways to find them is by visiting one of the many online automotive stores. Many online automotive parts stores, in an effort to provide consumers with more choices for high caliber backup parts for repairing, replacement, or customization, now offer a more extensive line of Mazda parts. The Mazda parts they offer range from high quality body/frame parts, car lamps, and other vehicles accessories. These parts, and many more, are produced by world-class auto parts manufacturers. This means that every part that passes through the assembly line has also passed strict quality assurance tests.Vehicle parts, like the Mazda 626 alternator, radiators, fuel tanks, pickup engine parts, bumpers, tail lamps, and the mirror for the Miata are crucial to your vehicle's effectiveness. This means that replacing your car parts with high grade Mazda components is an absolute necessity. Some auto parts stores will offer you super sweet deals on low cost Mazda parts; unfortunately these parts aren't as efficient as the original equipment manufacturer parts. Getting your OEM parts from an online store that specializes in Mazda parts, is a great way to outfit your car with parts you can depend on.The Mazda Miata engine parts, like the alternator, are very important to the automobile's effectiveness, because the alternator creates the electricity your car needs to operate; charging the battery and allowing the vehicle to start. Buying a Mazda RX-8 radiator is also very important since this particular component is responsible for the minimizing of the heat taken in by the engine while the car is running. If your car didn't have a radiator, your vehicle would overheat and break down on you.Replacement exterior parts for your Mazda: Miata hoods, the RX-8 front bumper, 323 front fenders, need to be super strong and durable because they are crucial to the driver's safety. Your vehicle's hood offers protection for the engine and other vital car parts beneath it. Also, the carbon fibers of the hood boost your vehicles acceleration capabilities because it weighs less and is more aerodynamic. The quality of the fender and bumpers should also be a priority to the Mazda consumer. The vehicle's fender helps keep you safe by absorbing the impact of an accident. Frequently, the fender gets too mangled during an accident to be useful anymore. These parts are easily replaced, but you need to replace them with durable replacement parts to insure that you are completely protected in the future.Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach, Florida. Tips To Buy Cheap Vehicles From Federal Auto Auctions
Why settle for a second-hand sedan when you can buy a used sports or luxury car for the same price? I am not pulling your leg. It is really possible for you to buy your dream vehicle at low prices.Just attend federal auto auctions and you will see for yourself that acquiring luxury vehicles at rock bottom prices is possible.1. Federal Auto Auctions UnveiledFederal auto auctions are basically public sale of vehicles that are sponsored by national or local government agencies. The vehicles sold in such auctions are usually forfeited, confiscated, or repossessed by various government organizations. Surplus vehicles that are previously owned by Federal agencies and its employees are also sold in these venues.Government-seized cars are vehicles that Federal government units have forfeited or confiscated from criminals. These automobiles are either used by bad elements in illegal activities or are properties that they own. On the other hand, surplus vehicles are usually retired government vehicles.Federal auto auctions are regularly held across the country. You can even buy vehicles in government-sponsored auctions over the Internet. Check classified ads and the papers for announcements and lists of government-sponsored car auctions.2. Advantages of Federal Auto AuctionsThe main benefit that we can get from buying cars from federal auto auctions is the low price. However, it is important for you to understand that this is an auction and there is a slight probability that prices of items sold here can go up.The price would really depend on the number of people who are will to jostle or compete for certain items. So be wise in bidding so you can get the best deals. You can get your supply of cars for your buy-and-sell car business from federal auto auctions. I have some friends who are making lots of money from reselling the items, particularly automobiles, which they have bought cheaply at federal auto auctions. One problem that many encounter in buying second-hand vehicles is paperwork. Sometimes, the discount that you got from buying used cars is offset by the money you need to spend for car registration and other important documentation. If you buy from federal auto auctions, however, you are ensured that the pertinent documents needed for the registration and transfer of ownership of the vehicle are complete.3. Important remindersDo your homework first before attending federal auto auctions. You should know the resale value of the model or type of car you intend to buy. Instead of saving money, some people end up paying more than the market value of the car that they bought because of lack of knowledge.Always keep in mind that auction in Latin means to increase progressively or gradually. Start your bid low and slowly bring it up if you have competition. Tendering a high bid at the start usually sparks a bidding fever that pushes the price of the car at very high levels.Lastly, you should check the cars you are interested in buying at federal auto auctions, or any auto auction for that matter, before even tendering a bid.Attend pre-bid inspection events so you can check the cars inside and out. Bring along a mechanic or a friend who is familiar with engines and market value of used cars. They can help you decide whether the cars you are interested in bidding for are worth it.To search for cheap repossessed cars, please visit www.buy-cheap-cars.info.

A Look At The Different Types Of Automobile Warranties Available Today
If you have ever taken the risk of buying a new or used automobile, you were probably given a warranty along with it. If this is your first time buying an automobile, you might be a little confused about the purpose of an automobile warranty, but rest assured that an automobile warranty can and will save you a lot of hassle, cost, and time in the future.Almost all warranties, for new automobiles, will cover the entirety of your automobile for the first year or the first 12,000 miles, whichever you happen to reach first. Some automobiles come with warranties that will cover certain parts of the automobile. New automobile warranties are very nice. Unfortunately, used automobile warranties are limited. This is because the automobile is used and there is no guarantee that your automobile won't break down just outside the parking lot of the dealership. There are several different types of warranties that will cover the different parts of the automobile. A bumper-to-bumper warranty covers the entire automobile (emission systems, suspension, brakes, power train, electronics, drive chain, steering, and exhaust) except for normal wear and tear maintenance. A Power Train warranty covers the engine, flywheels, cylinders, injection systems, and manifolds. A Drive Train warranty covers all the little parts that have to do with the wheels (transmission, drive shafts, axles, and clutch). A Corrosion warranty covers the sheet metal of the automobile for when rust perforates the body of your automobile. Unfortunately, this warranty does not cover human body damage like: keying, nicks, dings, cuts, scratches, or chips. The Emissions warranty is a warranty all on its own and covers any emissions problems you have with your automobile up to 8 years or 80,000 miles. Now that you have been enlightened on the types of automobile warranties you are more aware of your absolute need for them. So, if your automobile has reached its warranty limit, you might want to consider extending it for the life of your automobile, or until you trade it in for a newer model with an all new warranty.Keeping Your Eye on the Small PrintWhen you have the chance to purchase a warranty for your automobile, you should jump at the chance. Despite the price of the warranty, you can rest more easily. Your automobile and your pocketbook will thank you in the long run, when your automobile runs into issues with its parts. Think of an automobile warranty being health insurance for your automobile. You don't want to go without health insurance for yourself, so why would you want to go without a warranty for your automobile? At this point you are excited and want to go out and purchase or extend a warranty for your automobile, but here is some advice for you: don't get discouraged by the itty bitty print at the bottom of the warranty. The large print on the warranty will tell you that you are covered for every eventuality, but when you pull out your magnifying glass and read the small print you will discover that the large print isn't all you thought it was. Just because automobile warranties are confusing, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't buy one. An automobile warranty is an excellent investment, especially if you ever plan on driving your automobile anywhere.Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach, Florida. If you are looking for a custom motorcycle helmet, there are many shops that can make one for you. There are a lot of motorcycle helmets you can choose from. With many designs and makers to choose from, you would surely have your hands full finding one that you will like. Different designs offer different levels of comfort and styling. There are different types of motorcycle helmets available for different types of rides. One of the more common motorcycle helmet types is the full face helmet. This type of motorcycle helmet covers the whole head and provides the most extensive head protection to the rider. A rear extension of this type of helmet covers the base of the skull while the front tries to protect the chin. A plastic face shield allows protection to the eyes and nose and provides access to the face if pushed up. Groups Support Creation Of Plug-In Hybrids
If you remember the documentary "Who Killed The Electric Car?", then you would probably have even thought that maybe hybrid vehicles and plug-in vehicles may have suffered a really terrible death. But you see, perhaps because of such a documentary, many individuals, organizations, and groups have already decided that it would be best if we all did support the creation, designing, and production of hybrid vehicles that can be plugged in. Two groups which are currently showing great support for such a move include AutoNation, Inc. and Plug-In Partners. And they also are having a campaign wherein they are asking vehicle manufacturers to start producing such a special and helpful kind of vehicle.Mike Jackson, the current chief executive officer of AutoNation, does say, "The development of plug-in hybrids could reduce America's addiction to oil. These new hybrids would offer consumers a fifty mile all electric range, get the equivalent of 100 miles per gallon, be fully recharged at night and deliver all the performance and comfort of traditional gasoline powered vehicles without the damaging emissions. We believe Americans will buy these vehicles, which is why we want to sell them."The whole campaign that AutoNation supported was first launched during the start of this year. It was held Austin and was started out by the city itself and the city's Austin Energy group. This move has actually been successful so much so that they were able to bring in more groups and cities which include people from the areas of Los Angeles, Boston, Dallas, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Chicago, Phoenix, and Baltimore. And because of such an outcome, Will Wynn, the present Mayor of the city of Austin, exclaims, "AutoNation's support of the Plug-In Partners campaign demonstrates the growing momentum for the manufacturing of plug-in hybrids. Mike Jackson certainly knows what type of vehicles that Americans will buy. We salute his commitment to help us reduce this country's dependence on foreign oil and decrease greenhouse gas emission while also lowering fuel costs for consumers."Indeed, plug-in hybrids do bring about a lot of advantages for both the environment and for the people. The environment benefits from cleaner air and lesser emissions and people also do benefit from the same plus other things like lesser expenses. And for people who do would like to simply make their vehicles as unique as they are, there sure would be plenty of Ford, Mazda, or Saturn accessories available, depending on what vehicle manufacturers would decide to create their own plug-in vehicle hybrids. Jackson even emulates such by saying, "Next generation batteries are significantly more powerful and can tolerate discharging and charging much more forgivingly than earlier versions. That opens up the possibility of creating a vehicle that will deliver genuine benefits to consumers and society."Shane Morgay is a 34-year-old native of Ohio. She love cars and knows detailed information about them. She has a collection of miniature car collectibles and would love to have these collectibles become real ones. BMW Convertible Models Made In The US
European manufacturers have made convertible car models for many years, even for the american market. One of these is BMW. Have you heard about the Z3 roadster? This was the first mass-market and assembled BMW convertible in the United States. We saw this model on the market in 1996, just after it was featured in the James Bond movie, Golden Eye. The production ended in the year 2002 and before that many variants were introduced. The coupe version was also introduced in 1999 after having been manufactured and assembled in Spartanburg, South Carolina. In the late 2002 the Z4 model - the successor to the Z3 model - was introduced in the Paris Auto Show. The engineers which developed the Z3 used the E36 of the BMW 3 Series as a platform. The l name of the platform that resulted out of this was referred as the E36/7 model. The rear semi-trailing arm suspension from the E30 model was used rather than the more sophisticated multilink suspension from the E36. At first, just the 1.9 L M44B19 straight-4 engine was offered, though its 138 hp made the vehicle less of a performer than many buyers wanted. Feedback from customers told that the interiors of this model were not good as it was in the other models of this manufacturer. Especially bad looking was the plastic rear window even in comparison to to the glass unit found on the much-cheaper 1999 model Mazda Miata. In 1997, this little four was complemented by a larger straight-6 engine In the North American market, the 2.8 L M52B28. This engine, taken from the 328i, was especially attractive with its 189 hp. As the four was retired a 3.2 L S52B32 I6 engine was used in the M Roadster that came in the year after. In 1999, the 1.9L 4-cylinder engine was replaced with a 2.5L straight-6, producing as much as 170 hp. Curiously, this BMW model was badged as the '2.3'.Outside of North America a 2.0L straight-6 was used instead of a 1.9L 4-cylinder. All of the engines were replaced when the car was freshened for a few years later; more precisely in 2001. The range now consisted of the 2.2 L M54B22 (available outside of North America), 2.5 L M52B25, 3.0 L M52B30, and (for the M Roadster) 3.2 L S54B32. All three of these straight-6 engines lasted through the end of the car's run the year after. Except for the plastic window, the whole interiors were refurbished.Other problems of the Z3 model reported were bad oxygen sensors, the plastic water pump and a rear shock mount that failed. The retro styling though, was more popular and the Z3s have held their value fairly well in the resale market.M Roadster
From 1998 to 2002, the Motorsports division of BMW produced the well known model M Roadster. This model included suspension upgrades and the engine from the BMW M3. A 3.2L S52 motor was there in the as early as in 1998 as well as 1999, and 2000 M roadster along with a quad exhaust. The models after the millennium change, in other words the 2001 and 2002 models had the S54 motor from the E46 M3 as well as interior upgrades with additional gauges in the center console. A lighted "M" shift knob, various chrome bits throughout the cockpit and sport seats were also part of the standard equipment. There were also many exterior changes, like larger wheels spaced further apart and more aggressive fenders than were installed on the regular Z3. It was also an option to have hardtops.Terry Bolton is a writer and internet publisher who likes to publish automotive articles containing convertible cars. Read more at the websiteConvertibles.

Motorcycle Riding Tips
We all have enough "In memory of…" patches on our vest and do not wish to add any more. So here are 11 motorcycle riding tips to remind us of the things that can keep us in one piece and out of the hospital.· If you are a novice, sign up for and attend a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. Not only will this course teach you lots of the things that will help keep you safe but your motorcycle insurance will probably be slightly lower as well – and who doesn't want to save on insurance, especially when riding in states with Helmet Optional laws that require large bodily injury coverage to enjoy the right for those who ride to decide.· Remind yourself where your suicide or kill switch is located. This switch, if you realize you are going to have to drop the bike, can save you from having your own motorcycle run over you causing injury.· If you are just learning to ride and live in a highly populated area, have an experienced rider take you and your bike into an area with little or no traffic. A parking lot of a closed business works very well. Neighborhood streets can cause the residents to complain. Ride in this controlled environment until you feel completely in control of the vehicle. Learn how to stop and start easily and smoothly. Learn how long it takes to stop safely – it isn't the same as stopping a car.· First-time street riders should choose a time of day when the traffic is at a low. Jumping into rush hour traffic can easily lead to an accident on your very first outing. Select a route that takes you into very low traffic zones such as through neighborhoods, scenic routes and avoid at all cost getting on a freeway until you gain quite a lot of experience.· Never, ever become aggressive toward a car or truck driver. Those cars win every single time in a road rage situation. They are bigger, heavier and have a lot more power. If someone tailgates you, tap your brake lights a few times and if they don't back off, change lanes or give them the road by pulling off to the side· We all know black is the only cool biker color, right? Well, if you are going to be riding at night in a poorly light area, it is much more important to be seen than to be cool, no matter what your friends say! Be sure your lights are bright and clean for maximum visibility but also consider placing reflective tape on the back of your helmet (if you use one) and maybe a glow in the dark patch on your back.· Never trust cages. Car drivers somehow, no matter how loud or how rowdy bikers can be, manage to simply not see us! The blind spot in most cars is sufficiently large for a motorcycle to be completely hidden from view. But other cage drivers simply don't seem to look for us. Unless, of course, they son, daughter, husband or wife happens to ride; unfortunately, we can't tell who those people are and have to be doubly aware of other vehicles than when driving a car.· Never assume that just because there is no turn signal on that car that it isn't going to turn right in front of you. No matter how many other drivers don't use turn signals, ALWAYS use yours and, if you have a passenger during daylight, hand signals can be an extra preventative measure.· You know those trucker bumper stickers that say "If you can't see my mirrors, I can't see you"? Well, use this same common sense when riding. If you can't see the driver's face in the rear view mirror of the vehicle in front of you, chances are they can't see you at all. Stay out of blind spots at all times.· Once you become an experienced rider, when riding on city streets, always allow room for other people's errors. An added safety tip is that you should remain aware of where you would choose to put the scoot down if the need arose. If you get in trouble and have any time at all, select where to lay the motorcycle instead of allowing traffic or the bike to determine that for you. If you can elect to place the bike on the ground, allowing it to move out from between your legs at low speed, you will experience much less road rash than allowing momentum to take you with the motorcycle.· Novice riders should never carry passengers. That comes later with more road experience. The movements of a rider can cause a situation where you can easily lose control, especially at very low speeds.Above all, plan for safety so you will come home safely to ride again another day. Road rash and accidents costing hundreds of thousands in medical bills are all too common. Be defensive and be aware to avoid losing your bike – or worse, your life.Copyright 2006 Tyler PowersTyler Powers is a contributing author and webmaster for http://www.custom-choppers-guide.com You'll find a wealth of free custom chopper and a motorcycle building tips and resources to help you save time and money at http://www.custom-choppers-guide.com

Finding the Right Lock for the Motorcycle Helmet
The helmet is probably the only thing that can save the person who is involved in an accident. This is because the outer shell is made of strong material that can probably withstand the impact of a collision. When people buy a helmet, putting it on the head won't keep it from coming off if the biker stops suddenly or goes too fast. The only way this can be prevented is having the right lock securing the straps from one end to the other. The right helmet lock should be the kind that has two rings that fasten together. This is because snap fasteners have a tendency to come off during an accident. If the dealer doesn't have a helmet that can fit the size of the owner's head, the one the person got should be brought to a decal dealer so the original locking mechanism can be replaced.Once this has been changed, it will be a good idea to wear it on for the next 30 to 45 minutes. The individual should shake the head from one side to the next or look up then down to make sure it won't come off and is securely fastened. If everything is ok, the bike owner can already leave the store and enjoy driving down the open road. The right lock for the motorcycle helmet may come in black, blue or any other color that the customer wants. This will usually sell for about four to six dollars a piece that can also be purchased online for almost the same price.People who know how to put on the lock after purchasing the item online can do the changes at home. Those who don't can ask a friend or family who are familiar with motorcycle helmet straps for help. The person must remember to change the motorcycle lock after a few months or a year since this is prone to wear and tear. The same thing goes for the helmet that should be changed every 5 years. The motorcycle helmet is the only thing that can protect a person who is involved in a motorcycle accident. This may not protect the other bones in the body but this can surely protect the owner's head. It is essential then to get the right kind of lock for the helmet because this could mean save the individual from serious brain injury or death. This content is provided by Low Jeremy and may be used only in its entirety with all links included. Maternity Seat Belt - Pregnant Women Stressed Over Safety
Maternity Seat Belt - Whatever the invention or creation that a scientist sets about working upon, you can rest assured that the piece of equipment or gadget involved with the experiment will be given the scientists undivided attention where - priorities lie with the safety issues before any introduction outside the doors of the laboratory.Sadly, scientists are rarely recognized for the work that they do by the public. Experiments can take month`s even years - where scientists continuously work with their heads down to give us some new toy of some sort etc.
Inventor Steinar Kruse.in 1989 brought to our attention one of the most useful accessories to be used by pregnant women that was to ensure their safety whilst motoring, and that was the Maternity seat beltWomen are now taking to the road with peace of mind and contentment - knowing that the measures taken regarding the Maternity seat belt has been bettered than the existing seat belts used by expectant mothers.
In today`s modern world, the Maternity Seat Belt is a repositioning device designed to hold the lap portion of the vehicle`s existing seat belt low over the pregnant woman`s upper thighs, which is the suggested position for the seat belt. Continuing The Subaru Legacy
For 2007, those who simply adore the Subaru Legacy can be on the look out for more exciting things and features. The company even says that they are sending out the new version of the Subaru Legacy with a new appeal and exterior as well as a new engine for better and greater power. If you do take a look at the new 2007 Subaru Legacy, you would simply say that overall, the facelift and the changes that were done were really subtle. But subtle as they may seem, the company disclosed that the changes were extensive. And built using supreme Subaru performance parts, the 2007 Subaru Legacy is a vehicle that is sure going to last for years and years to come. One of the things that the 2007 Subaru Legacy 245 PS 3.0 liter model is sporting around is the fact that it has been designed and built using the very innovative 'three engines in one' drive system. And this kind of drive system can be also seen in all of the 2007 range of the Subaru Legacy – the saloon, the Sports Tourer, and the crossover Outback versions. The Subaru Legacy was first launched in the auto industry during the year 2004. And many experts in the field were surprised for Subaru really did launch such a vehicle so as to compete with all those leading and very popular European brands. But the Subaru Legacy proved everybody wrong for it still stands strong today and is making its way to the top. And for 2007, the Subaru Legacy would be seen sporting around with its all wheel drive chassis. It also has got all the best types of equipment one can find in the industry. The interiors are quite spacious compared to all other vehicles that the Subaru Legacy competes with. And when it comes to the vehicle's price tag, this one is offered for a far much lower cost.Subaru performance partsAs a former news correspondent for an auto-related website, Stacey has gathered extensive knowledge and experience in the automotive industry. Saturn Sky, 2007: The Weekly Driver
If there's one sure thing about the Saturn Sky, it's the new sports car's attention-grabbing appearance. Passersby stopped me at traffic signals and asked questions. Restaurant patrons came to my table and inquired. Neighbors wanted to know about the Sky, and even friends who care little about cars were interested. The Sky was introduced as manufacturer's first "high-performance" convertible sports car as a 2007 model although it was first available in the spring of 2006.The two-seater, which shares its basic design with the Pontiac Solstice, is available in two options, the 177-horsepower base model and the 260-horsepower, turbocharged Red Line. Both models, like the Solstice, are rear-wheel drive and have 5-speed manual transmissions as standard equipment. (A 5-speed automatic is also available in both models.)My weekly test drive was the base model, but it featured two option packages, including a premium leather trim package, automatic transmission and an upgraded sound system.Like the Solstice, Honda S2000 and Mazda Miata, the Sky is at its best with its rag-top down. The vehicle's exterior design, which some have compared to a Lotus, is sleek and handsome. The car's standard 18-inch aluminum wheels are perfectly contoured under the body. The Sky simply looks fine maneuvering through city traffic or cruising down the highway. The Sky has an affordable starting price at just slightly more than $23,000. But its attractive price comes at a "cost." The convertible top, for example, is manual. And while it easily fits into the trunk, the two side flaps and the center trunk hood latch are difficult to properly secure. The "trunk is ajar" warning light repeatedly flashed during my test week.(An area dealership technician explained that securing the top has been a regular problem for the Sky and he offered a technique to the finesse the top firmly into a secure position.)The Sky has a few additional shortcomings. Consider:* With the top down, there's no trunk space; With the top up, the trunk compartment is nearly useless because of its odd convex design;* The Saturn has only a 13 gallon fuel capacity;* Most gauges are adequately sized, with the exception of the very small (and difficult to see) gas gauge.Still, considering its price point, the Sky does have a lot offer. Its steering and handling are superior. The two passengers sit low in vehicle, providing the oxymoron of being in a spacious cockpit. Acceleration is sufficient event with the base engine, but the car was slightly underpowered in some hilly scenarios. The Sky has a sizable list of standard features — projector beam headlamps and foglamps, daytime running lamps, rear window defogger and remote keyless entry with an alarm. Smaller but nicely presented standard features include three stowable cupholders and a tire sealant and inflator kit.My test vehicle also included a premium trim package (leather seats, leather steering wheel, steering wheel audio controls, etc.) at a $750 addition. The automatic transmission added another $850 and the XM satellite radio and three months of service added another $350. With the options total at just slightly more that $3,000 and the standard $575 destination charge, the Sky's final prices approaches $27,000.Saturn has attracted a lot of attention with the Sky and it's a fine-looking vehicle. But the Sky also well defines the adage of waiting for the second or third year of a new vehicle before making a purchase. The Weekly Driver: 2007 Saturn SkySafety Features — Dual front side airbags.Fuel Mileage (estimates) — 22 mpg (city), 26 mpg (highway).Warranty — Bumper to bumper, 5 years/60,000 miles; Corrosion, 5 years/unlimited miles; Roadside (24-hour) assistance program, 3 years/36,000 miles.Base Price — $23,115.00

Car Repair Prices: Should I Go to the Dealer or My Local Guy?
There is lots of advice on where to service one's vehicle. Many argue that local shops are best, and that you only need to go to the dealer for warranty work and recalls. Others state that dealers are the real experts even though they're expensive. These arguments are interesting, but do little to clarify the myths and facts of dealership service versus local shop service. The two primary objectives of these arguments are money and quality. These two interweaving points need to be fleshed out when determining the appropriate facility in which to service a particular vehicle. In terms of money, all car repair is expensive. Whether at a dealership or local shop, studies show that car repair prices are extreme. Consumers are scammed tens of billions of dollars every year. Every type of service facility: dealerships, local shops, and franchises, are ripping you off in one form or another. Stating that one facility is more expensive fails to recognize that 98% of ALL repair shops are ripping people off. Moreover, the expense argument of car repair doesn't take into account the quality of service for the money. The quality of service between a dealership and local shop is a key factor to consider. There are vast differences in the quality of car repairs. There are many variables, from the customer service received, the diagnosis of the problem, the quality of parts used, to the technician performing the actual repair. In short, you could have a water pump replaced perfectly, and at a great price, at a dealership. You could have the same job butchered at a local shop. You could easily switch these scenarios, and add ten more variables. The concern over the quality of repairs is heightened by the fact that the majority of technicians lack the appropriate training, which can also increase the price. Furthermore, depending on the facility, the technician will be limited by the facility's resources—equipment and expertise, as well as by the service center's internal policies and practices. For example, at a dealer, a technician can only use factory parts (parts built by the manufacturer). In most cases, this is great. Factory parts are perfectly designed for the vehicle. However, a twelve-year-old car doesn't necessarily need a factory part. While it can't hurt, the age of the car may not justify the expenditure, if the repair can been done for significantly less elsewhere. The technician may know this, and have a great alternative solution "outside company policies." It's unlikely, however, that he'll speak up, or that he'll even be allowed to speak up.In cases like these, the customer suffers, having to pay significantly more than necessary. Dealership by-the-book protocols often dictate replacement of expensive parts, and thus dealer personnel will not and/or cannot offer alternatives. Following these mandates isn't necessarily bad, and this example is not intended to frame dealerships in a negative light. However, repairs in a dealership environment very often exceed the value of the vehicle being repaired. The point here is to illustrate that depending on the year, condition, and value of one's vehicle, a dealership "may" not be the best alternative. However, this is rapidly changing. Technological advancements require dealer service more and more for computer updates, software updates, intricate electronic coding, and a host of mechanical concerns outside the scope of the local garage.Unfortunately, a local shop may not be a good alternative either. At a local shop, a technician has a whole range of parts from which to choose. However, this presents problems. First, most local shops will use local parts suppliers regardless of quality because of speed, convenience, and business relationships. This means that you may get a better price (refer to Car Repair Prices: Who Charges More, Dealerships or Locals @ http://www.repairtrust.com/articles.html for an in-depth discussion on car repair prices). However, the use of many aftermarket parts (parts not built by the manufacturer) can cause numerous problems, and may even cause other systems to fail. This is common—and, you pay for it!Local shop technicians—the good ones anyway—know the difference between quality parts and cheap parts. However, as mentioned above, the good ones are rare. In light of this, many local shops are turning to the use of factory parts because it's just less headache. There's nothing more frustrating than installing an aftermarket component that has to be bent, twisted, tweaked, and manipulated to fit correctly or work properly. Not only is the part made poorly, it's been modified before it's even installed. Comforting, isn't it?Car repair concerns are not limited to parts. The quality of the worked performed—diagnosis, labor, experience, and installation procedures—is a critical factor. In this arena a dealership technician and a local shop technician are often worlds apart.A dealer technician has all available information and proper equipment at hand, although he may lack the training to know what to do with it. Nevertheless, he does have a team of co-workers to turn to, and he can draw from their experience. Dealer technicians also see your car and its types of problems daily, and what might be a complicated repair for a local shop is quite easy for a dealer. However, the structure and flat-rate environment of dealerships very often cause even experienced technicians to overlook even simple problems. This is exacerbated by the lack of effective of communication of an inexperienced or overwhelmed service advisor who is supposed to be advocating on your behalf. While there are numerous other obstacles, the point is that dealers are in the dark ages in terms of consistent quality service. Before discussing what's better, a dealership or local shop, a final point to consider is the condition of your vehicle after several years. What facility keeps your vehicle in "better" condition: a dealership or local shop? And, does this "better" condition translate into dollars?Given the current state of the service industry, it would be an aberration to receive consistent, quality service anywhere. Nevertheless, both local shops and dealerships are a vital component of the automotive service community. The consistent use of inferior parts and poor workmanship continues to be the local shop's downfall. Vehicles need to be maintained according to manufacturer specifications. There's no argument on this. Although dealers still struggle with good customer service and consistent positive results, a well-maintained vehicle from a state-of-the-art dealership results in a significantly better quality vehicle, long term. A better quality vehicle increases its value.-Theodore P. Olson (Ted)

Top 7 Tips On How To Beat The Speeding Ticket
It you have been driving for any length of time, you most certainly have come across one or more occasions where you were caught speeding. It is always an unpleasant experience to be pulled over by a police officer and to be handed a speeding ticket. However, there are ways you could be savvier and avoid getting caught speeding:* On a road with more than two lanes, drive in the middle lane. When you drive in the middle lane, nestled in the middle a bunch of speeding cars, you are less likely to be picked up by the radar detector and by the police officers. Instead, vehicles in front of or on the side of this speeding pack will more likely be caught for speeding. Driving in the middle lane also allows you to spot police officers easier than driving in the outside lanes* Avoid changing lanes frequently as it tends to draw attention from the police who are on the lookout for vehicles weaving in and out of the lanes. It is best to stay in one lane and drive at around the same speed as those cars around you. It will make you less noticeable to the police and less likely to be picked up by the radar detectors.* Drive up behind or beside another motorist who is driving over the speed limit and then take note of his speed, After having done so, slow down and pull back a bit so that your speed is slightly slower than his. So in case the car in front suddenly brakes to avoid a speed trap, you will have enough time to slow down before the cops can record your speed, while the car in front will be more likely to be fined a speeding ticket. However, if you still get pulled over despite the above precautions, you could still possibly wiggle your way out of a speeding ticket with just a warning from the police officer:* Having a good attitude helps. Addressing the officer respectfully, referring to him or her as "Officer" and paying close attention to what the officer is saying will help. Furthermore, if this is your first infraction and you did not go too much over the speed limit, the police officer may be inclined to just give you a warning.* Having a bad attitude and cursing at the police officer will only result in a hefty fine. If the officer sees that you are not taking the situation seriously, the officer is more likely to go ahead with the citation in order to teach you a lesson.* Do not admit to the police officer that you did actually break the speed limit. Doing so would limit your option in court and leave you no room to plead not guilty in court. If you take full responsibility while the officer is writing up the speeding ticket, the officer will testify to that in court. You would have lost the case on the spot, and you would have to pay the full penalty. If you still get a speeding ticket though, it might then be a good idea to consult with attorneys who specialize in traffic violations, or with retired police officers who provide speeding ticket consultations, as their expertise may help you take advantage of lesser known loopholes. For more on how to beat a Speeding Ticket visit Speeding Ticket. Top Ten Reasons For No-Start Vehicles
The top ten reasons that I see vehicles coming to Ace Automotive for no start problems
Electric fuel pump failure /fuel filter restriction
One of the most common no-start problems I have seen in recent times is the failure of in-tank electric fuel pumps, primarily due to lack of proper scheduled maintain on the vehicle owners part of not having the fuel filter changed at the proper intervals, sure some fuel filters can cost approx. $100.00 and up to replace several times a year but in some vehicles such as late 90s Jeep Gran Cherokees replacing the fuel pump costs nearly $800.00! How many times do you want to pay that?
Also another cause for premature fuel pump failure is allowing the fuel level to get to below ¼ tank and below for extended periods or running completely out of fuel running out of fuel allows the electric fuel pump to run "dry" which nearly immediately ruins the pump.
Vortec Design GM engines 4.3L, 5.7L with the CPI fuel injection system the CPI unit fails in many different ways; the plastic tubes leak, the "poppets get plugged, the fuel pressure regulator leaks.
Timing Belt Failure / Timing belt tensioner failure
Timing belts are designed to last approx. 40,000-60,000 miles under normal use not changing the timing belt before it "breaks" can result in expensive engine damage in some vehicles, such as Honda, Acura, Nissan, and Mitsubishi. Always have the timing belt changed a little before the recommended change interval and check the tensioner replace if questionable. Timing belt tensioner failure is common.
Distributor Failure / Including Ignition control modules
Mid 80s Gm 4 cyl. V-6s
Most all GMs with Electronic distributor 4, cylinder, V-6, V-8 1988-1998)
80s / 90s Ford TFI ignition (grey module bolted to outside of distributor)
Ford Pick-up assemblies inside the distributor
I have seen many distributor failures on Hondas especially due to bearing failure.
ECM/ PCM Failure (computer)
Primarily on mid 80s GM products with 2.8L engines and "W" in the 8th position of the VIN #
Alternators
Most problem alternator I have seen is the CS130 /CS130D on some mid 80s GMs for the CS130 and on later GMs the CS130D on like 92 and later makes like Gran Am, Gran Prix, etc.
Crank / Cam Sensors
Late model 92-93 Chrysler vehicles with 3.3L engine Caravan, Voyager,
Mid 80s GMs 2.0L crank sensors 2.5 L crank sensors
Mid 80s- early 90s GM V-6s crank sensors
90s Jeeps 4.0L engines cam/ crank sensors
Mitsubishi Galant 4 cyl engines crank sensors (failure due to balance belt failure and broken belt cuts sensor wires and damages sensor)
Batteries/ Cables /Clamps
Many neglected corroded Batteries find their way to our facility; Batteries do not last forever! Poor Maintenance practices cause many many battery failures which often leads to other problems.
Electrical Problems
Ford ignition switches, in escorts in the early 90s the electrical portion of the ignition switch will separate inside, some ford ignition switches have been known to cause fires!
Miscellaneous
Vehicles out of fuel due to inaccurate fuel gauges
Engines locked up due to lack of oil
Plugged Exhaust systems (catalytic converters
Teeth missing or worn off the flywheel cannot turn the engine over
Bad fuel injectors
But I have NEVER seen or heard of a car not starting or running bad due to the brand of gasoline being used!

Audi A8 Quattro 2004: The Weekly Driver Review
Value is an integral purchasing factor for many car buyers, and it's often
a simple equation. If a consumer has $2,000, $20,000 or $200,000 to
spend on a vehicle, what can they fairly expect get for their dollars? But as the price increases into the luxury vehicle category, is there a
point of diminishing returns? If a consumer has $75,000 to spend on a vehicle, the Audi A8 L Quattro,
for example, do they care if it requires premium fuel? Do they care in
that some consumer guide tests it fell far short of its touted 17 mph city
driving estimates?Or does the purchaser of the Audi A8 L Quattro prefer to revel in its
extreme quietness, its front and rear seat spaciousness and comfort and
its superior ride quality as the flagship sedan in Audi's fleet? If the latter is a priority, then my weekly test drive was as good as it gets.A redesign for 2004, the Audi A8 includes a 2.5-inch longer wheelbase,
an inch more leg room and and increase of 20 horsepower to 330
horsepower. The engine remains the same, a 4.2 liters with five valves
per cylinder. A 6-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift gate
replaces a 5-speed automatic. Other changes include optional 18 or 19
inch wheels instead of standard 17-inch wheels from the previous
generation, and optional heated front and rear seats and steering
wheel.Having not driven an Audi Quattro in its previous edition, I obviously
couldn't make any comparisons. Nonetheless, it was hard not to be
impressed with the vehicle from its platinum beige pearl exterior and
perfectly matched leather beige interior to its elegantly designed and
positioned birch wood trimmings. In short, the Audi A8 exudes elegance and drives accordingly. Steering
and handling and ride quality were all extraordinary in city and freeway
conditions. It accelerates well and seemingly commands respect on the
road. The vehicle also has the OnStar emergency contact system and
HomeLink system to remotely engage houselights upon near arrival.
Plus, the Quattro also features the Parktronic system. It provides a
beeping noise when one backs out or enters parking spaces. The
feature seemingly was engaged whether anything was in front or behind
the car.But with a base price of $68,500, a vehicle should have a lot more to
offer, and the Audi does. The standard feature list is long, not the least of
which ia permanent all-wheel drive, 16-way front seats and eight
airbags, powerglass sunroof (tilt and glass) and a 12-speaker sound
system. But my vehicle also included various options that added nearly another
$6,000 to the price. Those features included the aforementioned 19-inch
wheels ($1,900), a Launch Convenience Package (electronic rear
sunshade, rear vanity mirrors and tire pressure monitoring system,
$1,200) and Cold Weather Package (heated front and rear seats, ski
rack and heated steering wheel, $1,100). Two other options and a
destination charge brought the car's price to slightly more than $75,000.A buyer interested in purchasing two vehicles, could do well while
spending $75,000 or even considerably less. But as the adage goes, if
money is not an object, the Audi A8 L Quattro is a fine luxury car with
little, if anything, not first-rate.2004 Audi A8 QuattroSafety features -- Driver and front-seat passenger front-seat
airbags; Two rear-seat mounted side airbags, two front knee airbags,
headlight washer system, front and rear fog lights.Fuel Mileage (estimates) -- 17 (city), 24 mpg (highway).Warranty -- Bumper to bumper, 4 years/50,000 miles;

Cooling Down by Evaporating
Evaporator coils of air conditioning systems are sometimes called
cooling coils. But cooling coils are also used in air-handling
units. These contain chilled water. These are completely different
from those used in direct expansion air cond units. So cooling coils is not an accurate word to use in small air cond
units. Evaporator coils should be used instead. Evaporator tubes
must contain refrigerant liquid that can evaporate to become gas.In an air conditioning system, when the liquid refrigerant absorbs
heat, it turns to gas. The heat is thus transfered to the
refrigerant. That's how the heat is moved from one location to
another location. The evaporator coils are located in the low-pressure system of a
refrigeration circuit.A word of caution! If you run the evaporator blower without running the air cond
system, sometimes you might get a burst tube in the evaporator. Why? The heat from the blower air, evaporating the refrigerant
in the evaporator tubes, and with no where to go (remember the
air cond compressor is not running), will cause high pressures
in the tubes. So be careful that you do not run the blower while the air cond
system is not running.Until next time…"Strengthen Your Body Resistance!" Outbreaks of numerous mysterious

~AUTO ACCIDENT INSURANCE CAIM~ Getting Reimbursed For Your "Pain and Suffering"
You've had a motor vehicle accident some time ago when a local character by the name of Fred Fuddle smashed into your rear end but now you're in the home stretch with his Adjuster, I. M. Strong, and you're going to be paid for your loss by Strong's employer, Rock Solid Insurance. A good portion of it will be for your "Pain and Suffering". That is, in the lingo of insurance claim settlements, your "Compensatory Damages". Let's talk about that:BODILY INJURY PAIN: How much pain can an individual stand? The answer to that is: Reaction to pain not only differs with each of us, but often within each of us. While pain can usually be scientifically measured, the limits of human endurance cannot. We all have a different "Pain Threshold" - - that is, the point at which we begin to feel physical distress as we enter into, and then deal with, a period of suffering.A lot depends on what's going on in your life and how you experience it. Temperament and psychological factors are involved. Like, for example, your personal life is in a shambles (for any number of reasons) and that has hindered your ability to recover. Or, perhaps the company you work for is on the brink of bankruptcy! The mechanism through which you feel an injury is so complicated that there are times when the same pain appears to be more (or less) than that of previous days. For example: one day you have a problem that causes you to complain endlessly. This makes you impossible to live with and your pain seems to be much stronger. Yet, a similar situation on a much better day, doesn't upset you so profoundly and the pain is not nearly as bad.YOUR "PAIN AND SUFFERING" (Your "Compensatory Damages"): The type of injury you suffered, as a result of Fred Fuddle crashing into you (plus the nature and length of your treatment) are two of the best indicators for both the adjuster and Rock Solid Insurance to consider regarding the "Pain and Suffering" you experienced. However, there are several other areas you should call to the attention of Adjuster Strong so as to make him aware of what you've been dealing with.MEDICATION: The fact that you were prescribed either over-the-counter or prescription medication by Ole' "Doc" Comfort, your family physician, to relieve pain, inflammation (and/or any other injury symptoms), will help to convince I. M. Strong that your injuries were serious and caused you to endure a great deal of "Pain and Suffering". No matter which way you slice that cake, the more powerful the medication, and the longer it's prescribed for, the greater the value your claim will be. That's a fact of life in the business of insurance claims.LENGTH OF RECOVERY: The longer your recovery period, the greater your "Pain and Suffering"- - therefore the higher the settlement value of your bodily injury. Make sure "Doc" Comfort clearly indicates this in his Final Medical Report. Tell him he must state in writing (via the weeks and months) how long it will be, before you were able to engage in your routine activities. Make sure he doesn't send that report directly to Adjuster Strong. You get it first and then later on you'll send it along to Strong. But, before you do, read it. If good Ole' "Doc" Comfort hasn't clearly stated this, hand it back to him and tell him he must. You have every right to insist that he does. You're paying his bills, it's your report, your insurance claim, and your big bucks he's not being serious about! As long as you continue to have physical problems you should keep going back to see your doctor, again and again, and again ! Other than the obvious "Pain and Suffering" it will help to convince Rock Solid Insurance you've endured, there are two other very good reasons for doing this. They are as follows:(1) The fact that your records show visit's to your doctor, four, six, eight (or even more) weeks after the accident, will convince Adjuster Strong and Rock Solid that your injury took a long time to deal and required continual attention. (Plus it clearly indicates each and every day you were unable to work and therefore it proves, beyond the shadow of any doubt, the income you lost). Never forget: Your attending physician's Medical Report is the only way you can prove you were unable to work and in any court of law that will justify your claim for lost wages.(2) When you visit "Doc" Comfort be sure to tell him there's been little (if any!) decrease of your pain, discomfort, stiffness or immobility. Make sure, when he does execute that Final Medical Report, this is clearly stated in his written remarks. If it isn't you have every right to go back, hand it to him and insist that it is.SCARS: In many instances large and obvious scaring increase's the value of your claim (big time!) - - especially if the scarred portion of your body is visible. If you've been sitting at a desk for 25 years, your chin is double, your hair is gone, and you own a bulging stomach, and that's where the scar is, it's not going to be worth much. But, if you're a tall, dark and handsome, twenty year old and the scar is on your face, than it's worth a ton. Take colored photographs of every scar and every scrape that causes swelling and/or discoloration to your skin plus every mark on your body! After you've handed a copy of those photographs to Adjuster I M. Strong he'll be sending them to his boss in the Home Office. I've been in that seat so I can flat out guarantee you his immediate superior in the home office will stare at those photo's and gulp. He'll blanch, take a deep breath and send Strong a one liner that reads something like: "Do whatever it takes to get rid of this one. Se!ttle it and let's move on."If the scar is bad enough insist that Dr. Comfort refer you to a Plastic Surgeon for an opinion as to whether your scar can be repaired and/or removed. Once you've been examined ask that Specialist to detail in writing (and insist that he send his report to you) how much it will cost to make it look right again. You may never get it repaired, and/or removed, but include that Plastic Surgeon's report, plus copies of the bills you've accumulated because of your visits to him, and hand them to Adjuster Strong. This will absolutely, positively give your claim more value !QUESTIONS & ANSWERS REGARDING OBTAINING THE SERVICES OF A LAWYER:QUESTION: "Is it necessary to obtain the services of an attorney who will take a cut of 33 1/3% of the settlement (in some states up to 50%) he recovers from the insurance company of the individual who struck you"? ANSWER: "Yes, there are some situations where it makes sense to do so". HOWEVER: Especially in a case where the impact is absolutely not your fault in any way, shape, manor or form - - you should be clear with the lawyer you choose that those out-of-pocket expenses you would have been paid (weather they represented you or not) should not be part of his settlement!Let's say, for example: You were at a dead stop while waiting for a light to change from red to green, when struck a tremendous blow in the rear by a distracted driver. It's 100% clear to all concerned that the damages you received will be paid by the insurance company of the individual that struck you.The property damage to your motor vehicle is $2,800, your lost wages are $450, your final Doctor's bill (plus all your other Out-Of-Pocket "Medical Expenses") comes to $750 for a total (Property Damages/Lost Wages/Medical Bills) of $4,000. you live in an area where the lawyers typical "Contingency Fee" is 33 1/3%. QUESTION: "Should that lawyer take 33/13% ($1,333.33) of that $4,000"? ANSWER: "No"! QUESTION: "Why not"? ANSWER: "Because you were going to get that $4,000 weather there was an attorney representing you or not"! In a situation where the liability is clear the attorney should take, as his fee, 33 1/3% of everything he gets above and beyond , that $4,000!So, let's say the attorney obtained a settlement of $4,800 for your "Pain and Suffering". When that figure is added to the $4,000 of Out-Of-Pocket Expenses (as detailed above) the total would come to $8,800. To be fair he should not take 1/3 of $8,800 ($2,933.33 - - thus leaving you with $5,866.66) but 1/3 of the $4,800 ($1,600 - - thus leaving you with $7,200). QUESTION: "What has he done to earn that additional $1,333.34"? ANSWER: "Absolutely nothing"!DISCLAIMER: The only purpose of this article ~ AUTO ACCIDENT INSURANCE CLAIM ~ Getting Reimbursed For Your "Pain And Suffering" is to help people understand the motor vehicle insurance claim process. How to Align Your Shafts
In the last issue, we discuss about shaft seals and how liquid
is prevented from coming out from the pump housing even though
the shaft is rotating.Mechanical Shaft SealsSome mechanical seals are made to very fine tolerances. Damage
to mechanical seals and bearings can sometimes be cause by the
misalignment of pump shaft with the motor shaft.Whenever some of the motors or driven machinery is dismantled
or even when the machines are not running smoothly, alignment
has to be done. The purpose of alignment is to ensure that the centerline of
the motor rotor shaft coincides exactly with the centerline of
the driven machinery. Alignment is essential to ensure that the
machine runs smoothly with minimum vibration.Provided the two shafts are not bent crooked, the two alignments
to be checked and adjusted are: Offset alignment and Angular
alignment. Most alignments are rough alignment that can be done using
straight edge ruler and feeler gages. However for precision
alignment, the use of dial gauges with magnetic bases can be
used.Offset AlignmentThe radial alignment is checked using a straight edge ruler. By
placing the ruler across the coupling halves at the top, bottom
and both sides any gaps between the 2 coupling halves will
indicate that the shaft is offset slightly. The misalignment can
be corrected by shifting the motor or by putting shims to raise
up the motor or driven machine.Angular alignmentBy inserting a feeler gauge between the coupling faces and rotate
both coupling halves simultaneously we can check whether the
shafts have any angular displacement between them. The feeler
gauge readings at checked at four points on the shaft coupling.
Again the alignment is corrected by shimming or shifting the
machinery. The motor and the driven machine should be bolted solidly to the
base after finalizing the alignment positions of the equipment. For more information on alignment and the different tolerances

Reshaping the Mini-Van to Increase Aerodynamics for Efficiency
Today's modern minivan and SUV are quite stylish, however aerodynamically speaking quite lacking in laminar airflow efficiency. Convert this statement in gas mileage and you can readily see the need for massive aerodynamic improvement. The Modern Soccer mom needs a complete retrofit in her transportation choices. Drastic shape changes should be made but unfortunately those companies, which make too advanced or radical changes early on are not able to meet the demands of the mass-market consumer. For instance it doesn't look like a minivan or SUV, it is ugly, not hip or cool. Some early adopters may opt to buy and drive a radically new design in a minivan or SUV however unless that design can gain "Cool, The Bomb, Trick, Awesome" status then wide spread acceptance will not continue the trend. Car manufacturers test new ideas at auto shows and with artist's conceptions in trade journals and do lots of surveys before introducing new models. They know in advance what will sell and what will not, sometimes they will throw caution to the wind with a radical design, but there are plenty of failures from the EDSEL to modern day models such as the Pontiac Aztec, which floppedhttp://forums.autoweek.com/thread.jspa?for...essageID=216123Re-tooling for a new model costs millions and the R and D involved takes years to recoup. We need a more aerodynamically and efficiently designed SUV, but society needs to put their money where their mouth is? We see that environmentalists are upset with large SUVs, some extremist rogue criminal elements of the environmentalist movement have taken to arson of car dealerships selling the largest of SUV, the Hummer. It might be interesting to see these groups turn their efforts to the public to entice them through proper reasoning and education to buy the most efficient SUVs and minivans. The best design for an efficient minivan would be one with a full undercarriage shell, rear wheel covers or fairings, a bulbous nose and rounded tapered rear. The bulbous nose would need to be rounded in the front and then come back to a contoured indentation which would be similar to the indentation on a shoe arch after the first 1/3 of the vehicle, however the indentation would need to be all the way around; top, bottom and both sides. The second two-thirds of the vehicle would need to contour back out to the widest point of the bulbous nose and continue back to the end of the vehicle. As the vehicle come to an end it would be rounded out and slightly tapered to complete the shape.Scientists have studied these concepts in fluid dynamics for boat hull design, light aircraft design, over the road trucks and racecars.Lance Winslow - Online Think Tank forum board. Evil Secrets of the Car Wash Industry Revealed
All industries have their dark side and the car wash industry is no different. On first glance one might consider the car wash industry a bright star and a shining example of a "clean" industry and for the most part they would be correct. There are over 30,000 carwashes in the United States and most operators are in fact ethical practitioners. The car wash industry is over 10 billion dollars a year in this nation and growing along with America's love for their automobiles and SUVs. It stands to reason that with 16 million or more cars being sold each year in the United States alone that car washes is nothing a good business in a growth industry. And if you think about out it; God made dirt on the first day, when he created the heavens and the Earth. Carwash owners will find this significant and thank God for making the entire surface of the planet out of dirt.In 2004 the Car Wash Industry has changed the focus of the Industry. We had chastised the Industry and the ICA in their move to attack the home car owner washing in their drive way. Also trying to ban car wash fundraisers. We had criticized these things:http://www.carwashguys.com/080902_3.shtml .http://www.carwashguys.com/073102_2.shtml
.Yet, we now see in 2005 that there is a trend again afoot to use environmental laws to stop car wash fundraisers. Luckily this faction of the car wash industry is now butting heads with other owners who have a real soft spot for their communities. Although it took the industry an extra couple of years to change their direction, we still have to applaud this new tact. Originally they had proposed this:http://www.parthe.net/_cwg900/0000006d.htm
.Now the Car Wash Association has done a complete 180-degree turn. Now they believe they have achieved the new direction. Here are some comments from Mike Black the ICA-International Car Wash Association in his message to the industry.http://www.carcarecentral.com/pgRenderPageForNews.asp?Pruuid=%7B0057428A%2D3582%2D4ADE%2D8001%2D13A9CC999C16%7D
.The President of the association needs to address the lack of integrity of some of the rogue car wash owners as well, as they have drawn fire to good car washes and caused actions against good car washes. There are many who consider the car wash industry a black plague; police officers are quick to point out that crime happens at car washes and often unethical employees will sell drugs out the back of a car wash. Sixty minutes did a special of missing personal items out of cars and another focusing on the hot wax deals, which were not wax at all. The IRS profiled car wash owners as corrupt and often tax cheats:http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-mssp/carwash.pdfwhile the State of CA attacked car washes also over cheating car washes on payroll and workmen's comp fees also illegal aliens. Today the car wash industry claims they are changing, but we had already seen the changes this year in an effort to bring the Industry back inline with the proper ethics:http://www.carwashguys.com/00070303_1.shtml
.Yes, the car wash industry has a dark side, like any other business. We all need clean cars but at what price? Should car washes be allowed to hurt non-profits, bring crime to the community, cheat on taxes, exploit the labor, trick consumers on add-ons and hire illegal aliens? Many think not, some in fact wish to clean up the car wash industry. What do you think?Lance Winslow - Online Think Tank forum board. Free Car Washes and Customer Service for Mobile Detailers
A free car wash is a great tool to win happy customers and influence new business. It is also a guarantee to customers that if they are not 100% satisfied they will get a free car wash. No questions asked. You should use this technique whenever possible. Every single customer should leave with not only a clean car, but the feeling of just having had a positive experience. This turns into more referrals and happy customers who want more services. Of the many reasons people do not go to car washes, most have to do with customer satisfaction.A good customer relations technique is to give someone a free car wash. Sometimes a customer may not have been happy with the previous week's job. This may not totally be your fault, but nevertheless it's your opportunity to turn their negative experience into a positive one and build your business in the process. We recommend giving a free car wash to anyone unhappy with a previous week's wash.Maybe this was the first time they used your service, and their friends have bragged about you so much that no matter how good you are their expectations have become unrealistic and can't be met. Sometimes they might have a legitimate gripe, like a streaked window, a mirror that wasn't wiped down, whatever. These things can be worked out. Offer to do their wash free this week. It's easy and most people will take you up on it. It lets them know you're serious about customer service - particularly their service. Many times if you offer they won't accept, but it's a nice thing to do. The next time you wash their car they may tip you, simply because they feel bad for having complained!Always ask what it is they didn't like about your service. It could very well be that their complaint is something you usually don't look for, like not having wiped down between the grooves on the dashboard or a sticky residue on the center console, but they had assumed you would've seen it. Simply meet their needs. We actually got a complaint once about our best crew in Huntington Beach because they didn't Armor All the inside of the glove box. Oh, by the way, don't Armor All inside glove boxes. People hate that because it gathers dust afterwards. We run the company; The Detail Guys http://www.DetailGuys.com.You may wash a person's car only to have them later park it where sprinklers go off and water spots are created. New customers might think you are to blame. Water spots left by our high-pressure systems are usually easy to detect. They are tiny, whereas a large white water spot is created by the calcified water that comes from sprinklers. Rather than argue the point, simply explain the difference and give them a free wash anyway.Sometimes, a bird may come along and ruin all your hard work soon after you finish. You know, birds do sit on telephone poles and watch us work just getting ready to dive bomb the car the second we're done. The cleaner and more attractive the car, the more the birds seem to like it. If this happens and the customer seems displeased with their Car Wash experience, you obviously have no control over the birds but you do have the ability to wash their car again for free and keep their business.Money BackA money-back guarantee is also a good customer satisfaction tool. Many times an unhappy customer won't accept their money back. They would rather give you a second chance to do a good job. At this point, you should do the same as with a free wash. Give them a little extra attention, find out what they didn't like and fix it immediately.Mobile car washes and mobile auto detailers need to be proactive with their customer service policies. If you run a small business remember a little bit of "free service" goes a long way in keeping good customers coming back and promoted longevity and loyalty. It has always worked for us, it can work for you too. What is your favorite price? Think about.Lance Winslow - Online Think Tank forum board. Selling Your Car - Tips on Taking the Phone Calls
Appointments - How to take the phone callsNow that you have advertised you should soon start to get some calls as soon as your ad hits the media. It's not just a matter of making a time to see the car. This is a turning point and where you start to locate your buyer.A lot of the time I can tell that the person is going to buy my car even before he comes to see it.Pre-sellingYou can look at this step as pre-selling. If you do a good job here you will have buyers who are warmed to your car before they arrive.Which leads me to the purpose of the appointment stage.Purpose: The purpose of the appointment step is to pre-sell the customer on the car and yourselfSecondary Purpose: To make a time for him to see the car. What do I mean by pre-sell? I mean giving the buyer his chance to pick you out of the bunch as someone he wants to deal with. You only need to be slightly more friendly, on the ball and helpful to win him over. You can bet that the average person selling a car is completely unprepared.I know because I have bought cars from them. If they are not rude they are certainly off-putting. You have to drag the information out of them even if they have a perfectly good vehicle for sale. The little bit of thought you put into your presentation is time well spent. Here is an example of one of my callsMy purpose is only to get the person to come and see my car.I want him to be qualified – which means that my car is something he may want – not necessarily that he has enough money. If someone wants something – they usually find the money.I don't want to say anything on the phone that will reduce or minimize my final selling price.I want to know his needs and wants and communicate to him that my car will satisfy them. If you can manage to do this you have virtually secured an offer (when he comes to see it.)Here it is:Ring Ring!Me: Hi, Graeme speaking.Inquirer (Bob): Hi, I'm calling about the Ford. Do you still have it?Me: Hi Bob. Yes, I do. I've only just advertised it. I've been getting a lot of calls.
It's a 98 Ford Falcon Auto. It's done 40000 miles. The body is perfect. It's got no rust and 12 months registration. Does that sound like what you are looking for?Bob: It could be.Me: Ok. Is there a particular reason you are looking for a Ford Falcon?Bob: Well, yes. It's big enough for my family. Plus I've heard parts are cheap.Me: Ok. Yes, I've heard that parts are cheap, though I haven't needed any, luckily enough. And there is plenty of room for my kids.Bob: Sounds all right. When can I take a look at it?Me: Gee, well – it will have to be 5pm or 7pm because I need to go out for a bit. Which one suits you best?Bob: 7pmMe: Ok, Bob see you then. I'm at (my address). Do you know how to get there?Bob: Yes, I know it.Me: Ok Bob, see you then. You have acted politely, identified yourself and also found out why he wants your particular car. You have also made a time and by choosing the time to suit you, you demonstrate that you are NOT desperate to sell it but that it is just a routine thing you are doing while getting on with your life. I have not discussed price at all. I definitely did not bring it up myself. I closed the conversation in a friendly manner but with an expectation that I would see him at a certain time. That is a complete job and the purpose has been achieved. It is important to sound completely natural – so if you have to make a choice between sounding natural and including one of these techniques, choose being natural every time. The buyers mind set when he telephonesI will tell you what is going through the buyer's mind when he calls you. And this should give you an insight into how to act. You should never reveal that you know what is going on in his head because it ruins the whole game and the buyer doesn't like it. Just act like a real person but keep in mind what is going on at this stage. The buyer has found your car and has some slight hope that this might be the car that he is looking for. The hope is only very slight. What you are going to do is increase that hope until he asks to come and see your car.Let him ask; and he will if you do this properly. He is going to telephone you and ask you some questions. He is mainly not listening to the answers to these questions. He is listening to you and your tone of voice. He is feeling your voice and getting an impression of the car through the way you communicate to him. He is looking for chinks or glitches that show whether you are:- Honest / Dishonest- Open / Cagey- Responsible / Irresponsible- Look after your possessions / Treat them badly- Are desperate to sell / Merely doing a transaction because you have something better. He will also be listening to the information you give him but this is of secondary importance. If he likes the way you conduct yourself AND he likes your answers then you have almost certainly found a buyer.Buyers have a sixth senseBuyers have a sixth sense – a BS meter – a funny feeling – what ever you want to call it. I have no trouble at all selling cars. I don't really even consider that I sell them. I just people to buy it by doing everything right. Their sixth sense can work for you if you are giving them good value. They won't get into a lot of detail and will just buy your car. This is beautiful when it happens. If you are trying to rip them off it can definitely work against you.Create a positive impression from the first phone callNow if you do this well – you will create such an impression in the mind of the buyer – that he will come and buy your car even though there is a newer one at a lower price. He won't trust that lower priced car – he will trust your car and he may be right – you will never know.Be interested in the buyer not his money
-
When you get a telephone call be interested and open. It is not the time to start acting cagily or even think about negotiating. Your purpose is just to get the person to come and see the car.Say your name – this makes you more real.Volunteer informationDon't wait for the person to drag the information out of you. Volunteer all the basic information about the vehicle. If you can't remember it, have it on a piece of paper. Don't talk about price. This shows him that you are open and not cagey. If he has to pump you for the basic info on your car it looks like you are hiding something. If he has any more questions I answer them. The buyer usually appreciates it. The information may already be in your advertisement buy by going over it again you are confirming in his mind that it is real. He may have been looking at other cars and it will also remind him of your car.He will appreciate your helpfulness.Don't sound desperate for him to see your car – ham it up the other way.He will usually ask to make a time to see it. Do not act too keenly for him to come. I often tell the buyer something like after 7:30 pm, which is my dinnertime. Or it will have to be after 5pm because someone is coming to look at it at 4pm. This makes it seem more desirable and will increase the persons perception of the value. People rightly or wrongly follow the pack to some degree.Never Discuss PriceAvoid discussing price over the phone. Buyers will sometimes ask you what is your lowest price. Never answer this question. Don't be afraid to waste the buyer rather than state a price before he has seen the car. Instead turn it around and start asking him about himself and his needs. Is he looking for this type of car?How has he been going in his search? You will find that he starts communicating to you information so you can understand what problems he is trying to solve by purchasing your car. By asking him open questions his interest may come up and he will want to see your car. What if his main focus is money and he never talks about anything else?Once you understand his problem then let him know that your car has this feature that is the answer to his problem – don't over sell it – just let him know. He will usually want to come and see your car. If his problem is money then he is not someone you want to see your car – he will only be focused on money.Graeme Sprigge is the webmaster of SellMyCarForCash.Com, a website dedicated to enlightening you on how to get the most for your car in a private sale.
