The third world is often seen by Americans to be ignorant, but Africa and India know more about the spirit world than the supposedly civilized world does. When I traveled throughout Asia, I did not meet many people who doubted the existence of demons. Many in that part of the world pay local priests to protect their businesses from devils. Others are so aware that demons exist and work havoc in humans lives that they daily try to appease evil spirits through offering food and burning incense. Many Chinese in Taiwan use firecrackers to scare off evil spirits.When an enterprise is not profiting, one of the first things a Thai Buddhist will do is arrange for a ceremony to banish vengeful spirits. It becomes quite a festive event, complete with gongs, incense, orange-robed monks chanting incantations, and small children scrambling to get food delicacies placed before portable idols. The Japanese so fear evil spirits that they begin to squirm when you just make mention of the subject.Sir William Blackstone, the renowned English jurist who played a leading role in forming the basis of law in America, boldly acknowledged the existence of witchcraft and sorcery. Blackstone said,”To deny the possibility, nay, the actual existence, of witchcraft and sorcery, is at once to contradict the revealed Word of God in various passages both of the Old and New Testament.”Poisonous little creatures can tend to hide themselves quite well. I recall when I was a youth, our family used to live in the country on a small lake adjacent to the state park. Fishing and playing ball was about the only entertaining thing to do in such a remote place far away from the city. One morning my father and I were preparing to go fishing. As I approached the dock, I heard my Dad, who was not too far away, call me. He simply said, “Come here.” I said, “What?” To which he replied, “Just come here.” When I got to my Dad, he said, “Look.” Pointing toward the tree at the front corner of the dock, he showed me a snake that was lodged in the branches. Shortly thereafter, Dad took out his rifle and blew that snake to pieces.Venomous creatures don’t strike unless you get near them. The serpent does not bite without enchantment (Ecc. 10:11). Paul, on the island of Melita, was struck on the hand by a viper (Acts 28:3). The slithering serpent was hidden within a bundle of sticks. As Paul laid the sticks on the fire, the snake couldn’t take the heat and came out. The devil is no different, as the fire of God’s Spirit scorches and torments him. Holy Ghost preaching and ministry bring the fire of God’s presence, uncover pet sins and expose demonic influences.The Word of God is like fire (Jer. 23:28). When it is properly preached it burns. While ministering in Punjab, India I was asked to pray for the offering. As I began to pray, a devil in a lady in the crowd began to violently throw her body around about on the ground. My team promptly went after that demon and saw to it that the woman got free from its influence. This perfectly illustrates the potency of the fire of God’s Spirit and the immediate affect it has upon demon spirits. I simply began to pray to God concerning the offering and the devil couldn’t take it. There could be no coexistence when the fire of the Spirit entered.
