Change Your Perspective, Change Your Life

Author : Betty Mahalik
I was recently chatting with a good friend about her job and the company she works for. As with most corporations today, her company is going through massive change, tossing out the old and familiar, bringing in the new and unpopular. For some time she's been just short of miserable. But in this conversation, she happily reported that her attitude had changed. When I asked what had changed it, she told me three things we would all be wise to remember:First, she had decided that resisting how things were was only serving to make her unhappy. It wasn't changing the company nor the situation she found herself in.Secondly, she decided to join and even chair a committee of employees who were seeking to address some of the problems and challenges they were facing. Their first challenge: getting the company to release its iron-grip on supplies--pens, note pads, printer paper, etc.--so the employees could do their jobs. That seemingly small victory empowered them to take on bigger challenges and gave her and the others on her committee something positive to focus their energies on.Finally she said she realized she would rather make the best of things where she was than go off on a search for pastures that weren't likely greener anywhere else. Just a few years short of retirement she decided she would be giving up a lot more than she gained by making a major career change at this point in the game.Maybe you can relate to my friend, being disgruntled about all the changes your company is going through, or changes you're going through in your life. You're miserable, wanting things to change. But I hope her example inspires you to remember three important lessons that serve us in any and all circumstances where we're less than 100% satisfied:1) Accept things as they are rather than resisting.2) Get involved in finding solutions rather than finding fault and focusing on problems.3) Weigh your options to see if a change is really for the good or just for something different. At the end of the day, it may be your perspective that most needs to change.I think this twist on the 12-step programs' Serenity Prayer says it all:"God Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know it's me!"This week, I invite you to change your perspective and change your life.***********************Quote of the Week***********************"Show your character and your commitment to personal nobility through your actions."
