Being In The Now

Author : Vicki Miller
"When the compulsive striving away from the Now ceases, the joy of Being flows into everything you do. The moment your attention turns to the Now, you feel a presence, a stillness, a peace." - Eckhart Tolle, The Power of NowMy husband and I recently returned from a visit with his mother in Nebo, North Carolina. When my friends hear that I am "vacationing" in Nebo, they say, "What's there to do in Nebo?" If you've ever been to Nebo, you might ask the same question. It's a small rural town located in the foothills of NC.The highlight of Nebo for me is not about "doing" but about "being". It's turned out to be a time of total relaxation for me. I come from a long line of "doers". You know - individuals that constantly have to be doing something, involved in some task, or dreaming up the next project! I used to worry about not having enough to do and about boredom in my early visits to my husband's home town. But now I look forward to just being there. I love being with my Mother-in-law. It's a time of no computers and no cell phones. It's a wonderful slower pace of rocking on the front porch, listening to her tell stories about growing up with eight other siblings and no indoor plumbing. It's about being in the kitchen together cooking and laughing over baking disasters we've had. It's about strolling through the State Park and enjoying the changing colors of the leaves. It's about picking apples off the trees in the backyard and tasting their sweetness. It's about hearing wonderful wisdom from her 82 years of being a caring, kind woman, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
For me, it's always a valuable lesson in living in the present moment. Enjoying where you are right now, not wishing you were someplace else or thinking about your "to-do" list. I could revert to my old habit of worrying about what wasn't getting done or about not accomplishing something. But this worry would only trigger pain and discomfort. I would much rather have peace and joy!
Where are you mentally right now? As Eckhart Tolle says: "Stress is caused by being 'here' but wanting to be 'there' or by being present but wanting to be in the future". Are you stressing your mind (and body) with the burden of a hundred things to do in the future rather than focusing on the present? What would happen if you dropped that burden and put 100% of your attention on NOW?
If you're writing a report, making a presentation, repairing a piece of equipment, talking with a friend, exercising, participating in a meeting, cooking a meal, driving, cleaning, reading to your children, praying, sitting on a park bench, mowing the grass, golfing, meditating, or just being - do it totally. Enjoy the moment and see the peace it brings!Vicki Miller, CUCG, PCC / Copyright October 2006As a Life Transition Coach I teach clients the five steps to a prosperous life now!
